Shelford Road, Cambridge

The development consists of seven dwellings to replace a former joinery shop on this prominent street in Cambridge. It was decided at an early stage that the design strategy was to create a high quality modern housing scheme that gave precedents for future development in the area.

The form, material and detailed composition of the development has evolved from extensive research into the local vernacular with the scheme placing great importance on the quality of living for future occupants and the privacy/ amenity areas of existing neighbours.

The new houses have been carefully positioned to minimise disruption to adjacent buildings and the materials have been selected to reference (but not replicate) those found locally and will be hard-wearing but also textured, possessing a feeling of quality.

This development has demonstrated that a high standard of architecture design and quality of life can be provided even on the most challenging of urban site.
