Twenty-Nine Architecture were approached by a long-standing developer client to maximise this site that had previous planning consent for a single 4 bedroom dwelling. Following an initial appraisal we determined that the site could accommodate a more efficient layout to provide two detached 1½  storey 4 bedroom family homes that addressed the character of the area and its neighbouring properties to provide a positive built form.

The proposal makes reference to the local character in terms of scale, massing, form and density to provide a high-quality scheme. Due to its location, it was considered at an early design stage, the development should be of the highest quality whilst incorporating a character that is capable of joining the ensemble in the streetscape. The layout has been greatly determined by the sites’ orientation and relation to the neighbouring properties and character of the area. The proposal fronts onto the private driveway with the units are set back to align with the existing building lines.

In terms of design, the proposal aims to pick up on the simple vernacular housing typologiess along the street. Although a contemporary approach could have been adopted on this site, we were keen to commission a “traditional” design which would reflect the character of the area; whilst using a high standard of detail and good quality materials. A plain tiled pitched roof, red brick plinth and rendered walls with timber windows has been used to create a design sympathetic to the local context.
